In Desperate Need of HELP!

Okay so my next huge organizing headache (or should we say complete LACK of organization) is my hopeless filing system.  Mostly it is a hopeless mess because of lack of proper equipment, should we say for lack of a better term.

Here is my current situation and I am not sure how.much.longer.I.can.take.it.  Seriously.  End.of.rope going on here!

Box holds all our official documents and blue filing folder things that I just like to keep on hand.

This is an extention of my filing system: house, health, school and visa/passport documents.

It is actually kind of embarrasing to even post these pictures.

Honestly, how much can a girl take?

So, here is my reality:

1. Filing cabinets are a fortune here.  At least when I have found them they are several HUNDRED
    dollars.  No kidding.

2. The filing box in the first photo is way.too.small and costs a small fortune as well.  i probably need
    three of them to file everything adequately and seriously, THREE boxes?  and space is an issue, of
    course.

So, calling on any ideas my readers might be able to offer.

1. Should I just swallow my irritation and save up for the ridiculously expensive (but nice looking) filing cabinet?

2. or should I put everything in the small plastic dividers (second photo), divided by category and well marked and take up a entire shelf in our closet for our documents?

3. or some amazing solution to be offered by YOU that silly me has not even thought of??!!!  Now, that would be wonderful!
